Hugo II: Whodunit? (1991) – Free DOS Game to Download & Play

Hugo II: Whodunit? takes the adventure series in a new direction — trading the haunted mansion for a murder mystery at an English country estate. The second game in David Gray’s beloved trilogy is longer, more complex, and arguably more charming than its predecessor.

About Hugo II: Whodunit?

Released in 1991 by David Gray, Hugo II: Whodunit? finds Hugo and Penelope invited to the Carrington estate — where their host is promptly murdered and everyone becomes a suspect. Hugo must solve the mystery while navigating period-accurate locations like a garden maze, a wine cellar, and an attic full of secrets.

Like all Hugo games, this is freeware distributed directly by David Gray.

Gameplay

Whodunit uses the same text-parser interface as the original but offers a larger world to explore. The English countryside setting gives David Gray more room for varied environments and more complex multi-step puzzles. Characters play larger roles — gathering information through conversation is essential to solving the mystery.

Why It’s Worth Playing

Hugo II successfully evolves the series into a murder mystery genre while maintaining the approachable, good-humored tone that made the original so endearing. It is the most narratively engaging of the three Hugo games and a highlight of early 90s independent adventure design.
