About Wing Commander

Wing Commander (1990), developed by Origin Systems and designed by Chris Roberts, is a space combat simulation that revolutionized the genre by combining dogfighting with a cinematic narrative. You play as a pilot aboard the TCS Tiger’s Claw, fighting against the alien Kilrathi in an interstellar war.
The game introduced a campaign structure where your performance affected the storyline — winning or losing key battles took the narrative down different paths. Voice acting, between-mission briefings, and a genuine sense of military camaraderie made it feel unlike anything that had come before.
Gameplay
Wing Commander puts you in the cockpit of various fighter spacecraft for intense 3D dogfighting missions. You manage shields, afterburners, and weapons while taking on waves of Kilrathi fighters, bombers, and capital ships. The physics are simplified but the combat is fast and genuinely tense.
Between missions you interact with wingmen in the ship’s bar and receive mission briefings from your commanding officer. Your wingmen have distinct personalities and can be lost permanently if they die in combat — a consequence that makes each mission feel meaningful.

Why Wing Commander Is Worth Playing
Wing Commander didn’t just define the space combat sim genre — it helped establish that games could tell serious, cinematic stories. Chris Roberts went on to create subsequent entries and eventually Star Citizen, but this is where the vision began.
For fans of science fiction and aerial combat, Wing Commander remains thrilling. The Kilrathi are memorable antagonists, the missions escalate well, and the branching narrative was groundbreaking for 1990.
