Winter sports plus attitude equals Ski or Die. Released by Electronic Arts in 1990, this DOS sports anthology wrapped five distinct snow-based minigames in a colorful extreme sports aesthetic that felt genuinely rebellious for its era. It was one of the most creative sports games of the early ’90s.
About Ski or Die

Ski or Die was developed by Electronic Arts and released in 1990. The game takes place at a fictional winter sports resort called Ski Academy. Five events are available: Downhill Blitz (speed skiing with gates), Acro Aerials (ski jumping with trick scoring), Snowboard Half Pipe (freestyle halfpipe runs), Inner Tube (tube riding over ramps and jumps), and Snowball Blast (combat snowball fight). Up to eight players can compete in a tournament across all five events.
Gameplay
Each event plays distinctly. Downhill Blitz is a straightforward speed race through flag gates. Acro Aerials requires timing your jump and button combinations to execute tricks mid-air. Snowboard Half Pipe combines timing with trick combinations for maximum score. Inner Tube emphasizes navigation and avoiding hazards. Snowball Blast is a one-on-one combat game where you pelt an opponent with precisely aimed throws.
The multiplayer tournament mode creates natural competition across all five events, with cumulative scoring determining the overall winner.
Why It’s Worth Playing
Ski or Die has an irresistible personality. The “extreme sports” attitude, the colorful character designs, and the variety of events make it feel like a celebration of winter rather than a simulation. Each minigame is simple enough to learn immediately but offers enough depth to create meaningful competition. As a local multiplayer experience it’s still genuinely fun today.
