Ultima IV: Quest of the Avatar (1985) – Free DOS Game to Download & Play

Ultima IV: Quest of the Avatar changed what video games could be about. Released in 1985 by Richard Garriott’s Origin Systems, it was the first major RPG where the goal was not to defeat an evil wizard but to become a virtuous human being. EA released it as freeware in 1997, making this landmark game freely available.

About the Game

Developed by Richard Garriott (Lord British) and published by Origin Systems in 1985, Ultima IV introduced the concept of the “Avatar” — a spiritual and moral ideal for the people of Britannia. Rather than defeating a villain, the player’s goal is to master the Eight Virtues: Honesty, Compassion, Valor, Justice, Sacrifice, Honor, Spirituality, and Humility. Your actions throughout the game are judged against these virtues, making Ultima IV one of the first games with genuine moral consequences.

Electronic Arts acquired Origin Systems and released Ultima IV as freeware to mark the 20th anniversary of the series.

Gameplay

Ultima IV is an open-world RPG with top-down exploration, turn-based tactical combat, and extensive NPC interaction. The world of Britannia features towns, dungeons, castles, and a vast overworld to explore. Your party of up to eight characters — each embodying different virtues — develops through traditional RPG leveling, but progress toward Avatarhood requires moral choices, not just combat victories.

Why It’s Worth Playing

Ultima IV is one of gaming’s most important works — the first time a video game asked players to be good rather than merely victorious. Games like Planescape: Torment, Undertale, and countless modern RPGs trace their moral complexity directly back to Ultima IV. Playing it is not just entertaining; it is understanding the origin of meaningful choice in games.
