About Star Wars: TIE Fighter
Star Wars: TIE Fighter (1994), the sequel to X-Wing, inverts the formula by putting you in the cockpit of Imperial fighters defending the Empire. Developed by LucasArts, it expanded the mission types, improved the engine, and added a secret society subplot that gave the story surprising moral complexity.
TIE Fighter is widely considered the finest space combat simulation ever made. Flying fragile but lightning-fast TIE fighters against Rebel ships, pirates, and traitorous Imperial officers, you gradually ascend through the ranks of the Emperor’s Hammer — a secret order within the Empire.
Gameplay
You pilot multiple Imperial craft — TIE Fighters, Interceptors, Bombers, Defenders — each with distinct handling. Power management is more critical than ever since TIE Fighters lack shields, requiring you to rely on speed and accuracy. Missions are more complex than X-Wing’s, with multiple waves and objectives.
The secret society system rewards completing bonus objectives with membership advancement and exclusive missions. The campaign unfolds across eight tours of duty, each with a distinct story arc. The sheer variety of mission types — escort, interception, inspection, boarding — keeps the experience fresh throughout.
