Among all the games that defined the golden age of point-and-click adventure, The Secret of Monkey Island stands alone. Released by LucasArts in 1990, it combined brilliant puzzle design with genuine wit, memorable characters, and a Caribbean pirate setting that remains irresistible more than three decades later.
About The Secret of Monkey Island

The Secret of Monkey Island was designed by Ron Gilbert, Tim Schafer, and Dave Grossman, and published by LucasFilm Games (later LucasArts) in 1990. Guybrush Threepwood arrives on Mêlée Island with a single goal: to become a mighty pirate. To achieve it, he must complete three trials, woo the Governor Elaine Marley, and confront the ghost pirate LeChuck — a villain as memorable as any in gaming history.
Gameplay
Monkey Island uses the SCUMM engine’s verb-based interface — click verbs like “Look At,” “Pick Up,” and “Use” to interact with the game world. Puzzles range from straightforward inventory combinations to elaborate multi-step solutions that require lateral thinking. One of the game’s most famous sequences — the Insult Swordfighting system — requires learning and responding to pirate insults and comebacks in precise order.
Crucially, Monkey Island follows LucasArts’ commitment to non-fatal design: you cannot permanently die or reach an unwinnable state. Every mistake is recoverable. This makes it welcoming to players who find traditional adventure games frustrating.
Why It’s Worth Playing
Monkey Island’s writing remains among the funniest in any DOS game. The jokes land, the characters are lovable, and the puzzles are creative without being unfair. The relationship between Guybrush and Elaine subverts adventure game conventions in clever ways. It’s a game that rewards replaying — even knowing every solution, the journey is enjoyable.
