Blake Stone: Aliens of Gold (1993) – Free DOS Game

Released just days before Doom in December 1993, Blake Stone: Aliens of Gold is one of history’s great “what if” games. A spy-themed first-person shooter built on the Wolfenstein 3D engine, Blake Stone offered an engaging campaign and clever features that Wolfenstein itself lacked. Though it was overshadowed by Doom’s arrival, it remains a genuinely excellent DOS game — and the first two episodes are free.

About the Game

You are Agent Blake Stone, British Intelligence operative, sent to infiltrate the facilities of the mad scientist Dr. Pyrus Goldfire. Goldfire has developed a technology to mutate humans into alien hybrids, and he plans to sell it to the highest bidder. You must fight through six episodes of his laboratories, factories, and research centers to stop him.

Developed by JAM Productions and published by Apogee Software, Blake Stone used the Wolf3D engine but added significant improvements: informants who give you hints (if you don’t shoot them), floor and ceiling textures, food dispensers for health restoration, and a more complex level layout with actual objectives beyond “reach the exit.”

Gameplay Features

Blake Stone plays like a smarter, more feature-rich version of Wolfenstein 3D. The levels are larger and more complex, with scientists scattered throughout who will give you tips — but look like enemies, so you have to decide whether to shoot or talk. Informants can reveal secret areas and boss locations, making it worthwhile to pay attention.

The weapon progression starts with a pistol and expands to an auto-charge cannon, a grenade launcher, and a BFG-style weapon. Enemies range from guards and mutants to alien hybrids and biomechanical creatures that become increasingly dangerous as you progress.

Why It’s Worth Playing Today

Blake Stone deserves far more recognition than it received. The spy setting is a refreshing change from demons and Nazis, the gameplay improvements over Wolf3D are meaningful, and the sheer amount of content in the shareware release is impressive. It is a forgotten gem of the DOS era — the kind of game that rewards discovery.
