Not every DOS classic was about shooting things. Paganitzu offered something different — an atmospheric puzzle-adventure set in ancient Aztec temples, where thinking replaced shooting and every step forward required planning. It’s one of the most underrated games in Apogee’s library.
About Paganitzu
Paganitzu was developed by Keith Schuler and published by Apogee Software in 1991. Alabama Smith (no relation to a certain archaeologist) explores three ancient Aztec temples across three episodes, solving room-by-room puzzles to find treasure and reach the exit. All three episodes are now available as freeware.
Gameplay
Paganitzu is a tile-based puzzle game viewed from a top-down perspective. Each screen presents a single room that must be cleared to progress. Enemies patrol set paths and must be avoided or neutralized by manipulating the environment. Pushable blocks, keys, locked doors, and pressure switches create layered puzzles that require planning multiple moves ahead.
Alabama cannot attack enemies directly — survival depends on outmaneuvering them. The difficulty escalates thoughtfully, introducing new puzzle elements at a pace that teaches without overwhelming.
Why It’s Worth Playing
Paganitzu is surprisingly absorbing for a game so simple in presentation. The puzzle design is clever and consistently surprising. The Aztec temple aesthetic — stone walls, torches, mysterious artifacts — gives it atmosphere that many bigger DOS games failed to achieve. For players who prefer thinking over shooting, Paganitzu is an essential discovery.
