Every real-time strategy game ever made owes a debt to Dune II: The Building of a Dynasty. Released in 1992 by Westwood Studios, it established the template for the entire RTS genre — base building, resource harvesting, unit production, and real-time combat — concepts that became so fundamental they now seem obvious.
About Dune II: The Building of a Dynasty

Dune II was developed by Westwood Studios and published by Virgin Games in 1992, loosely based on Frank Herbert’s Dune novels and the 1984 David Lynch film. Three Houses — Atreides, Harkonnen, and Ordos — battle for control of Arrakis, the desert planet whose spice is the most valuable substance in the universe. You choose one house and guide them to dominance across nine campaign missions.
Gameplay
Dune II established the RTS formula that Command & Conquer and Warcraft would refine. You build a base, harvest spice using massive Harvester vehicles, convert spice to credits, spend credits on military units, and use those units to destroy the enemy. Sandworms lurk in open desert and devour any unit that lingers too long on sand — a constant environmental threat that adds tactical depth.
Each House has unique units. The Atreides get a sonic tank. The Harkonnen deploy a devastating Devastator. The Ordos rely on faster, cheaper units and electronic warfare. The tech tree expands as missions progress.
Why It’s Worth Playing
Dune II feels ancient by modern RTS standards — no unit grouping, clunky interface, no multiplayer — but its historical importance is undeniable. Playing it reveals the DNA of every strategy game that followed. The Arrakis atmosphere is brilliantly realized: the desert heat, the worm warnings, the alien architecture all feel genuinely alien and threatening.
