Abuse is one of the most technically innovative DOS action games ever made — a side-scrolling shooter that used the mouse to aim independently of movement, years before twin-stick controls became standard. Developed by Crack dot Com in 1995, it has been open-sourced and is freely available.
About Abuse

Developed by Crack dot Com and published in 1995, Abuse puts you in control of Nick Vrenna, a prisoner in a maximum security facility where a government experiment has gone catastrophically wrong and turned inmates into murderous mutants. The game runs on a custom engine that combined smooth side-scrolling with mouse-aimed shooting — a control scheme that felt like the future in 1995.
The source code was released by the developer, and the game is available as freeware through multiple sources.
Gameplay
Abuse uses the keyboard for movement and the mouse to aim in any direction — you can run left while shooting right, run and jump while aiming up. This freedom creates combat that feels genuinely different from contemporary games. Enemies are fast and relentless. Levels are large and complex, with switches that open doors, secret areas, and environmental hazards that add to the pressure.
Why It’s Worth Playing
Abuse is a game from the future accidentally released in 1995. Its control scheme predates modern twin-stick shooters by a decade. The dark, grim atmosphere is intense and well-executed, and the level design rewards exploration. It is demanding — genuinely difficult — but that difficulty makes completion satisfying.
