Blake Stone: Planet Strike (1994) – Free DOS Game to Download & Play

Blake Stone: Planet Strike arrived in the same month as Doom and was immediately overshadowed — but it deserves a second look. A standalone sequel from Apogee’s 3D Realms division, it improved on the original Blake Stone with faster gameplay, better level design, and the same spy-thriller atmosphere. The shareware episode is free.

About Blake Stone: Planet Strike

Developed by JAM Productions and published by Apogee Software (3D Realms) in December 1994, Blake Stone: Planet Strike is the sequel to Blake Stone: Aliens of Gold. Agent Blake Stone must infiltrate Dr. Golding’s space fortress and prevent the deployment of a biological weapon. The game uses an enhanced version of the Wolfenstein 3D engine with improved graphics and new gameplay mechanics.

Gameplay

Planet Strike moves faster than both Wolfenstein 3D and the original Blake Stone, with tighter level design and more aggressive enemy behavior. New features include moving platforms, outdoor sky areas, and advanced enemy AI that can call for reinforcements. Blake’s toolkit of weapons — from pistol to plasma cannon — provides satisfying variety in combat approaches.

The spy aesthetic gives the game a distinct personality. Scientists can be informants, guards have patrol patterns, and the level design favors tension over pure chaos.

Why It’s Worth Playing

Blake Stone: Planet Strike is the Wolf3D-engine game that came closest to challenging Doom on its own release day — and it is better than history gives it credit for. The improvements over the original are substantial, and the spy-action theme remains one of the most distinctive in the genre. For fans of early FPS games, it is an essential chapter in the story.
