
Boot up most Apogee-published platformers from the early 1990s and you’re looking at EGA’s sixteen colors doing their best. Boot up Hocus Pocus, from 1994, and the jump to VGA is immediate and obvious — painterly fantasy backdrops, parallax scrolling layers, and a color depth that makes the genre’s earlier entries look like a different console generation, not just a couple of years older. Despite sharing a name with the Disney film that hit theaters the year before, the two have no connection — the overlap is coincidental, a wizard-themed title picked independently by a small studio working with Apogee.

An Outside Studio, Not an In-House Team
Hocus Pocus was developed by Moonlite Software and published by Apogee Software in 1994. The premise casts you as Hocus, an apprentice wizard trying to earn a place on the Wizard’s Council by fighting through four themed worlds — nine levels each, thirty-six in total — filled with more than thirty enemy types, from bats and skeletons to mechanical constructs and oversized bosses. Duke Nukem, the original side-scrolling version rather than the later 3D shooter, leaned into a grittier action-hero fantasy where Hocus Pocus goes bright and family-friendly, and the elemental bolt-upgrade system gives its combat more built-in variety across 36 levels than either of those contemporaries typically offers in a single playthrough.
