DOS gaming had many pinball simulations, but Epic Pinball set a standard that most couldn’t match. Released by Epic MegaGames in 1993, it combined physics-accurate ball simulation with SVGA graphics that made the tables look genuinely like photographed machines — a visual achievement that made it the go-to DOS pinball game for years.
About Epic Pinball

Epic Pinball was developed by James Schmalz and published by Epic MegaGames in 1993. The game features multiple themed tables available as separate shareware releases — Android (the original free table), Deep Sea, Excalibur, Speed Devils, Jungle Trouble, Super Android, and others in the commercial releases. Each table has its own layout, rules, and bonus objectives. Epic MegaGames later released the complete collection as freeware.
Gameplay
Epic Pinball simulates a real pinball machine with accurate physics: ball weight, flipper response, bumper reactions, and drain behavior all feel properly calibrated. The tables feature standard pinball elements — bumpers, ramps, slingshots, kickbacks, multi-ball — plus theme-specific objectives. Android’s science fiction theme includes targets that activate robot features. Deep Sea features an ocean exploration narrative through table objectives.
High scores are tracked per table. Skill shots reward precise launch timing. Multi-ball mode requires managing two or three balls simultaneously without draining. The challenge depth increases significantly as you learn each table’s specific bonus systems.
Why It’s Worth Playing
Epic Pinball’s physics model remains impressive — the ball moves with convincing weight and momentum that cheaper DOS pinball games completely failed to replicate. The SVGA table artwork is beautiful. And the variety of thematic tables means each one feels like a genuinely different game. For pinball enthusiasts exploring DOS gaming, this is the essential starting point.
