About the Game
You play as Corvus, one of the last surviving members of an elvish race called the Sidhe. Three evil Serpent Riders have corrupted the gods and unleashed an army of monsters on your world. Armed with a magical arsenal and a grimoire called the Tome of Power, you fight back through haunted castles, catacombs, and hellish dimensions.
Developed by Raven Software and published by id Software, Heretic used the Doom engine with several clever additions. Most notably, it introduced inventory items — powerups you could collect and save for later, a first for the genre.
Gameplay Features
Heretic plays a lot like Doom, and that is very much a compliment. The movement is fast, the combat is intense, and the level design is labyrinthine and full of secrets. But the fantasy setting gives the game a completely different feel — instead of shotguns and rocket launchers, you wield a staff, a crossbow that fires ethereal bolts, a dragon claw, and the devastating Phoenix Rod that launches explosive fireballs.
The Tome of Power is one of Heretic’s best features. Activating it transforms every weapon into a supercharged version for a limited time — the crossbow fires three bolts at once, the dragon claw shoots a spread of energy blasts, and the Phoenix Rod launches an enormous fireball that can clear a room instantly.
The enemies are well-designed and varied: ghostly Disciples of D’Sparil, lumbering Golems, fire-breathing Sabreclaws, and the fearsome Iron Lich, a skeletal sorcerer that serves as the episode’s boss. Each enemy type requires a different approach, keeping combat fresh throughout.
