About Dark Ages

Dark Ages box art

Dark Ages was developed by Robert Allen and published by Apogee Software in 1991. You play as Prince Gareth of the Kingdom of Volekind, whose father the king has been overthrown by the sorcerer Garth. Across three episodes — each free in part one — Gareth must fight through forests, dungeons, and castles to reclaim his throne.

Gameplay

Dark Ages is a classic side-scrolling action platformer with a medieval fantasy theme. Prince Gareth can throw daggers at enemies, jump between platforms, and collect power-ups that enhance his abilities. The game features detailed EGA graphics for 1991 and a surprisingly atmospheric soundtrack that sells the medieval setting.

Enemy variety is strong — you’ll face armored knights, giant spiders, demons, and flying enemies that require different approaches. The level design steadily increases in complexity throughout the shareware episode.

Why It’s Worth Playing

Dark Ages stands out in Apogee’s library for its strong fantasy aesthetic and fluid animation. It lacks the polish of Commander Keen but delivers a complete and enjoyable action experience that holds up well. For fans of fantasy-themed DOS games, it is an essential piece of early 90s shareware history.
