Many licensed adventure games are disappointments. Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis is the exception — a LucasArts adventure so good that it was once considered a genuine rival to the actual Indiana Jones films. Released in 1992, it told an original Indy story with the pacing, humor, and authenticity of the best entries in the series.

About Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis

Fate of Atlantis was designed by Hal Barwood and Noah Falstein and published by LucasArts in 1992. Set in 1939, Indy and his former partner Sophia Hapgood race against Nazi agents to find the lost city of Atlantis, whose power source could tip the balance of World War II. The story spans locations from Barnett College to Iceland, Monte Carlo, and the Mediterranean.

Gameplay

Fate of Atlantis uses LucasArts’ SCUMM engine and follows the non-fatal design philosophy of Monkey Island — you cannot die or reach an unwinnable state through mistakes alone. What makes it unique is the path system: early in the game, players choose between three distinct approaches — Team Path (emphasizing dialogue and cooperation with Sophia), Wits Path (puzzle-focused solo play), and Fists Path (action-heavy, requires fighting Nazi soldiers).

Each path plays through significantly different versions of the same story, with different puzzles, locations, and scenes. The replayability this creates is extraordinary for an adventure game — three complete playthroughs, each with genuine differences.

Why It’s Worth Playing

Fate of Atlantis has some of the best writing in any LucasArts adventure. Indy and Sophia’s bickering relationship feels authentic to the films. The puzzles are challenging but fair. The Atlantis mythology is inventive and compelling. And the three-path structure makes replaying rewarding rather than redundant. It’s one of the finest adventure games ever made.
