Strife (1996) – Free DOS Game to Download & Play

What happens when you build a role-playing game on top of the Doom engine? Strife answered that question in 1996, and the answer was remarkable. Developed by Rogue Entertainment, it grafted quest systems, dialogue, branching storylines, and NPC relationships onto Doom’s combat framework — creating a genre hybrid that wouldn’t be attempted again until the Deus Ex series four years later.

About Strife

Strife box art

Strife was developed by Rogue Entertainment and published by Velocity Inc. in 1996. The setting is a dystopian world ruled by the oppressive Order. You play as a nameless drifter who joins the Resistance, a rebellion against the Order’s theocratic control. Choices throughout the game affect which faction you ally with, which characters trust you, and ultimately which of two endings you receive.

Gameplay

Strife runs on a modified Doom engine with additions including dialogue trees, quest logs, inventory management, and a reputation system. NPCs in Resistance towns offer missions, sell equipment, and provide information — all through a text-based dialogue interface. Completing quests earns gold to buy weapons, armor, and health items.

Combat maintains the Doom engine’s responsive first-person shooting. Weapons range from conventional crossbows and assault rifles to energy weapons and the devastating Mauler. The level design is more open than typical Doom maps, with towns to explore, secret areas to discover, and multiple approaches to objectives.

Why It’s Worth Playing

Strife is one of the most underrated DOS games ever made. The RPG mechanics are thin by dedicated RPG standards but revolutionary for a first-person shooter. The dystopian narrative has genuine weight — characters feel like people, choices matter, and the world has internal consistency. It’s a fascinating prototype for the immersive sim genre that didn’t get the credit it deserved at launch.
