Pharaoh’s Tomb (1990) – Free DOS Game to Download & Play

Long before the world knew Commander Keen or Duke Nukem, Apogee Software was publishing brilliant shareware platformers under the Pharaoh’s Tomb banner. Released in 1990, this treasure-hunting action platformer is one of the earliest examples of what Apogee did best: tight gameplay in a bite-sized free episode.

About Pharaoh’s Tomb

Pharaoh&s Tomb box art

Pharaoh’s Tomb was developed by George Broussard — who would later co-create Duke Nukem — and published by Apogee Software in 1990. You play as Nevada Smith, a self-described “greatest archaeologist of all time,” who descends into an Egyptian tomb in search of treasure. The four-episode game follows the Apogee model: episode 1 is free, episodes 2 through 4 are sold separately.

Gameplay

Pharaoh’s Tomb is a fast-paced platformer with puzzle elements. Nevada must navigate trap-filled tomb chambers, avoid mummies and bats, collect treasures, and find the exit on each floor. The game features 20 levels per episode packed with spikes, crumbling floors, and hidden passages.

The controls are simple but the level design demands precision. One wrong step sends you back to the start of a floor, creating a satisfying loop of learning, failure, and mastery that defines the best early shareware games.

Why It’s Worth Playing

Pharaoh’s Tomb shows where Apogee’s house style came from. The formula that made Duke Nukem and Commander Keen massive hits — exploration-focused platforming, generous level design, a strong theme — is all here in 1990 form. For fans of DOS gaming history, it is a fascinating and genuinely fun origin point.
