The Build engine had one more trick up its sleeve after Duke Nukem 3D. Shadow Warrior, released by 3D Realms in 1997, took the same technical foundation and built a ninja-themed FPS around it — faster, more acrobatic, and armed with one of the most satisfying melee weapons in DOS gaming history.
About Shadow Warrior
Shadow Warrior was developed by 3D Realms and released in 1997. You play as Lo Wang, a warrior for a Japanese corporation who discovers his employer is attempting to summon demon armies. Lo Wang defects and battles through 28 levels of corporate headquarters, Japanese temples, and demon dimensions to stop the invasion. 3D Realms released Shadow Warrior Classic as freeware via Steam and other platforms.
Gameplay
Shadow Warrior uses the Build engine — the same technology behind Duke Nukem 3D — and pushes it further with features like sloped floors, dynamic lighting, and detailed Japanese architectural environments. The weapon selection blends traditional and modern: katana, shurikens, riot gun, grenade launcher, rail gun, and the devastating nuclear warhead.
Lo Wang can dodge-roll, crouch, jump, and swim. The levels are large and full of secrets — alternate paths, hidden items, and Easter eggs reward thorough exploration. Enemy variety includes human soldiers, demons, ninja assassins, and massive boss creatures.
Why It’s Worth Playing
Shadow Warrior is fast, loud, and creative in ways that still surprise. The katana genuinely changes how you approach close-quarters combat — it’s faster and more satisfying than any gun.
