About the Game
Doom puts you in the boots of a lone space marine stranded on the moons of Mars. The Union Aerospace Corporation has accidentally opened a gateway to Hell, and it is your job to fight your way through wave after wave of demons, imps, and corrupted soldiers. Developed by id Software — the same team behind Wolfenstein 3D — Doom was a quantum leap forward in first-person gaming.
The shareware version, known as Knee-Deep in the Dead, is the first of three full episodes and was officially released as freeware by id Software. It contains nine complete levels and gives you a full taste of everything Doom has to offer.
Gameplay Features
What made Doom so revolutionary was its engine. Unlike anything seen before, it rendered environments with varying heights, dynamic lighting, and complex non-orthogonal layouts. You were no longer walking through a grid — you were navigating a living, breathing hellscape.
The weapons are a big part of the appeal. You start with a pistol, but quickly pick up a shotgun, a chaingun, a rocket launcher, and the iconic BFG9000. Each weapon has a distinct feel and purpose, and mastering when to use each one is half the fun. The enemies are equally memorable — imps that hurl fireballs, hulking Pinkies that charge at full speed, floating Cacodemons that spit plasma, and the terrifying Cyberdemon waiting at the end of the episode.

Why It’s Worth Playing Today
Some games age. Doom does not. The level design is tight, the combat is fast and satisfying, and the atmosphere — built from pixel art, ambient sound effects, and a heavy metal-inspired soundtrack by Bobby Prince — still holds up.
