Boot up a DOS game from the early 1980s and the only sound you’ll hear is the PC speaker’s thin, tinny beep — a single square-wave voice fighting to represent gunfire, music, and dialogue all at once. Before the Card: PC Speaker Silence

IBM’s original PC shipped with an internal speaker capable of exactly one thing: toggling a tone on and off. Programmers got remarkably creative with it, using rapid pulse-width tricks to fake crude digitized speech, but there was no getting around the fact that it was a single-channel beeper never designed for music. Early PC ports of arcade games sounded like a pale imitation of their coin-op originals, and that gap was obvious to anyone who had played a console or home computer with dedicated sound hardware.

AdLib Gets There First

The first company to seriously fix this was AdLib, a Quebec-based firm that released the AdLib Music Synthesizer Card in 1987. It was built around the Yamaha YM3812 chip — commonly called OPL2 — a nine-voice FM synthesis chip capable of much richer, more musical output than anything the PC speaker could manage. Game composers loved it, and AdLib support became a genuine selling point for titles throughout the late 1980s. The card had one major shortcoming, though: it was music-only. It had no way to play digitized sound effects, and no built-in joystick port, which mattered a great deal to a PC gaming market that still relied on add-on cards for basic peripherals.

Creative’s Gambit: The Sound Blaster

Creative Labs, a Singapore-based company, released the original Sound Blaster in 1989. Under the hood it used the same family of Yamaha FM synthesis chips as the AdLib, which meant it could play AdLib music out of the box — but it went further. The Sound Blaster added an 8-bit digital-to-analog converter for playing back sampled sound effects and voice, plus a built-in game port for a joystick. For the price of one card, a player got music, speech, sound effects, and a way to plug in a flight stick. That combination, not raw audio fidelity, is what made the Sound Blaster the card to own.

Creative followed up quickly. The Sound Blaster Pro (1991) added stereo FM output, and the Sound Blaster 16 (1992) introduced 16-bit sampling and higher sample rates, keeping the product line ahead of imitators for the rest of the DOS era. What “SB Compatible” Actually Meant

DOS had no standardized sound API the way modern operating systems do. Every card needed its own driver code baked directly into a game, and developers couldn’t support every card on the market — so they picked their priorities. Because the Sound Blaster had captured such a large share of installed systems, “Sound Blaster compatible” became shorthand on game boxes for guaranteed digitized sound effects and speech, not just background music. Rival card makers responded by building their own hardware to mimic the Sound Blaster’s DSP command set directly, so that games written for Creative’s card would work on their products without any extra effort from the developer. Being SB-compatible wasn’t a nice-to-have; for a sound card released after 1990, it was close to mandatory for commercial survival.

The Standard That Outlived Its Rivals

Other cards had real strengths. The Gravis Ultrasound, released in 1992, used wavetable synthesis with actual sampled instrument waveforms loaded into onboard memory, and produced music that could sound dramatically more realistic than FM synthesis — the demoscene and tracker-music communities adored it. The Roland MT-32 and later General MIDI modules sat above everything else in raw fidelity, and became the audiophile’s choice in adventure games and RPGs from Sierra, LucasArts, and Origin. But neither ever displaced the Sound Blaster as the safe default, precisely because so much existing software was written against its command set first.

What Digitized Sound Actually Unlocked

It’s worth being specific about why the jump from FM-only music to digitized playback mattered so much to game design, not just fidelity. FM synthesis can approximate instruments, but it can’t play back a real human voice with any clarity. Once Sound Blaster-class digitized audio became common, games could ship actual recorded speech instead of text boxes, sampled explosions and gunfire instead of synthesized approximations, and ambient audio layers that felt closer to a real environment. Adventure games leaned into this almost immediately, and by the early 1990s voice acting had gone from a novelty to an expected feature in any big-budget release.

AdLib’s Fall

AdLib’s story has a genuinely sad postscript. The company that had defined PC music for years couldn’t keep pace once Creative Labs combined FM music with digitized effects and a joystick port in a single affordable card, and AdLib filed for bankruptcy in 1992, just five years after its original card launched. It’s a blunt illustration of how quickly a category leader can be displaced once a competitor bundles the same core feature with something the market wants even more — in this case, sound effects and speech, not just background music.

Legacy in Emulation

That dominance is still visible today.
